What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare equal amounts of water in an open container and a covered container over several days. They observe, measure, and describe changes in the water levels.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students predict that the open container's water level will drop while the covered container's level stays nearly the same. They use dated water-level marks as evidence and name evaporation as the cause.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a spill, leak, or person caused the lower water level. They may also think the water stopped existing, or that a lid prevents any water from becoming vapor.
How to Assess It
- Show drawings of equal water levels in an open cup and a covered cup. Ask students to draw the levels three days later and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It
Place equal water in two clear cups, cover one, mark both levels daily, and record changes for three days.
Ask students to write: Where did the missing water go, and what evidence from the cups supports your answer?
Play Sort the Scene with picture cards, placing each open or closed container under level drops or level stays.
Compare a shrinking puddle with water in a capped bottle, then list what keeps the bottle's water from disappearing.
