What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students pour and measure liquids in containers with different shapes and sizes. They compare amounts using the same measuring unit and explain that liquid height alone does not show volume.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student measures liquid amounts accurately and labels them with the correct unit. The student identifies which amount is greater, less, or equal, even when containers look different.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a taller liquid level always means more liquid. They may confuse container capacity with the amount inside or compare counts made with different measuring cups.

How to Assess It

Give students a marked measuring cup and two differently shaped containers. Ask them to measure each liquid sample, record the amounts, and circle greater, less, or equal.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students use one small cup to fill bottles, bowls, and jars, then count and compare how many cupfuls each container holds.

  2. Show equal amounts in a tall glass and a wide bowl, then ask students to explain why the liquid levels differ.

  3. Pairs draw container cards and measurement cards, then match each container to a greater, lesser, or equal liquid amount.

  4. Students follow a simple drink recipe, measuring water and juice before comparing how much of each ingredient they used.
