What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students observe ice, liquid water, and water vapor. They describe each state by its shape, movement, visibility, and response to temperature changes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify ice as solid water, flowing water as liquid, and invisible water vapor as gas. They use observations to explain how heating or cooling changes water's state.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think ice is not water or that evaporated water disappears. They often call visible mist water vapor, although water vapor itself is invisible.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of an ice cube, a puddle, and drying clothes. Ask them to name the water state shown and write one property of each.

Ways to Teach It
Set out ice cubes and cups of water, then hold a cold metal tray above warm water for students to record changes.
Ask how an ice cube, a puddle, and water vapor are alike and different, then have students name one property of each.
Sort scenario cards, such as freezer ice, spilled water, and drying clothes, into solid, liquid, or gas, then explain each choice.
Connect freezer ice, rain puddles, and a drying towel to places where students encounter water changing state at home.
