What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen for claims about observations or events. They ask a question that gets the speaker to explain what evidence supports the claim.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student independently asks for evidence when a classmate makes a claim. The student listens to the answer and decides whether the evidence fits the claim.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat the claim as a question instead of asking for evidence. They may accept a guess, opinion, or answer from an adult as proof. Some ask for evidence even when a person is simply sharing a preference.
How to Assess It
- On an exit slip, write, “Mia says the classroom plant grew because it got more sunlight.” Ask students to write one question that requests evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a mystery bag, let one student identify the object by touch, and have the partner ask for evidence.
Read a short claim about an animal, then ask students to write a question that would make the speaker explain the evidence.
Play Claim Detective, where students earn a point for asking an evidence question after hearing a claim card.
Show two days of weather pictures, make a claim about which day was warmer, and have students ask what supports it.
