What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a claim about an observation and tell what evidence supports it. They also ask classmates to explain the evidence behind their ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to a specific observation, measurement, or result when explaining an answer. They can separate evidence they noticed from a guess or opinion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a guess, feeling, or repeated claim as evidence. They may give unrelated details or say a source told them without naming the observation that supports the claim.
How to Assess It
- Show a photo of a plant leaning toward a window. Have students state a claim, name one visible detail that supports it, and ask a partner for evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Place objects in mystery bags, then have students identify each object and cite two touch-based clues as evidence.
After a sink-or-float test, ask students to write which result surprised them and what observation supports their answer.
