What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how people, animals, and plants use water to live and grow. They identify safe choices near pools, beaches, lakes, and other bodies of water.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gives examples such as drinking water, watering plants, and providing water for pets. The student names clear safety rules, including staying with an adult, walking near pools, and wearing a life jacket.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think only thirsty people need water, or that clear water is always safe to drink. They may also believe strong swimmers do not need adult supervision or life jackets.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of children near a pool and ask, “Name one way water helps living things and two choices that keep these children safe.”

  3. Play Water Safety Charades with actions such as walking, wearing a life jacket, asking an adult, and entering water safely.

  4. Study a local pool, beach, or lake sign and have students explain what each posted rule tells visitors to do.
