What Students Need to Do

Students choose and carry out grade-appropriate strategies accurately and efficiently. They recall useful facts, follow procedures, and switch methods when another approach fits better.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students solve familiar tasks without getting stuck on each small step. Their work is accurate, their methods are efficient, and they can check results or change strategies when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think fluency means being the fastest or memorizing steps without understanding them. They may repeat one method for every problem, rush, or skip checking their work.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: give three problems from the current unit and ask students to solve them, check one answer, and explain one strategy choice.

   Give pairs counters, tiles, or graph paper to model a current problem, then record an efficient numerical method.

   Ask students to explain which of two correct methods is more efficient for a given problem and why.

   Play a three-minute accuracy round with six mixed problems, then let students correct errors and try again.

   Have students compare two grocery receipts, calculate totals or unit prices, and choose the better buy.
