The Standard
Complete tasks with mathematical fluency. Mathematicians who complete tasks with mathematical fluency: Select efficient and appropriate methods for solving problems within the given context. Maintain flexibility and accuracy while performing procedures and mental calculations. Complete tasks accurately and with confidence. Adapt procedures to apply them to a new context. Use feedback to improve efficiency when performing calculations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a method that fits the numbers and the problem situation. They calculate accurately, adjust procedures for related problems, and improve their approach after checking work or receiving feedback.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve grade-level problems accurately and explain why their chosen method fits. They can switch methods, check results, and use feedback to make later work more efficient.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fluency means working quickly or memorizing one procedure. They may use the same method for every problem, ignore the context, or change only their answer after feedback.
How to Assess It
- Give one current-unit calculation and a related version with changed numbers or context. Ask students to solve both, name each method, and explain one adjustment.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs current-unit problem cards to sort by the most efficient method, then solve and check one card from each group.
Ask students to write which of two shown methods is more efficient for a problem and defend their choice with specific steps.
Play Strategy Switch, where students solve a problem, draw a method card, and solve it again using that method.
Have students compare two store discounts, travel routes, or payment plans and choose a calculation method that fits the decision.
