What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a table, equation, or written situation into a graph of a sine, cosine, tangent, or related function. They label key features and connect each feature to the given representation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce an accurate graph with a sensible scale and correctly placed key points or asymptotes. They identify the domain, range, period, intercepts, extrema, midline, amplitude, and shifts when applicable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse amplitude with period or use the wrong sign for a phase shift. They may space key points unevenly, ignore the midline, or draw tangent graphs without asymptotes.
How to Assess It
- Give students y = -2sin((π/3)(x - 1)) + 1. Ask them to graph two periods and label the amplitude, period, midline, phase shift, maximum, and minimum.

Ways to Teach It
Use a paper plate unit circle and transfer the rotating point’s heights onto graph paper to build one sine cycle.
Ask students to explain how amplitude, period, phase shift, and vertical shift change the parent sine graph.
Run a card sort matching trigonometric equations, tables, graphs, and feature lists, then have pairs justify each match.
Model a Ferris wheel height function, then graph rider height over time and label the maximum, minimum, midline, and period.
