What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students derive trigonometric identities from the relationship between sine and cosine. They use those identities to find unknown ratios and solve problems, including choosing the correct sign by quadrant.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can derive the three Pythagorean identities using division and reciprocal relationships. They can find missing trigonometric ratios, choose signs from the quadrant, and check that results satisfy an identity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read sin² θ as sin(θ²). They often choose the positive square root without checking the quadrant. Some change both sides while proving an identity, which does not show that one side equals the other.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Start with sin² θ + cos² θ = 1 and derive 1 + tan² θ = sec² θ. Then use tan θ = -3/4 in quadrant II to find sec θ.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs measure a paper right triangle, calculate sine and cosine for one angle, then confirm that their squares sum to one.
Ask students to explain why dividing sin² θ + cos² θ = 1 by cos² θ produces terms involving tangent and secant.
Create matching cards with known ratios, quadrants, identity steps, and missing ratios, then have teams assemble correct sets.
Give students a ramp angle and vertical rise, then use trigonometric ratios and an identity to determine the ramp length and horizontal run.
