What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prove facts about triangle angles, sides, congruence, and segments using definitions, postulates, and earlier results. They select suitable theorems to find unknown measures and solve geometric or real-world problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a relevant definition, postulate, or theorem and use it in a clear proof. They find missing measures, explain each step, and apply triangle relationships to diagrams and practical situations.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a diagram as proof or assume unmarked sides and angles are equal. They often confuse a theorem with its converse. Some use AAA or SSA to claim triangle congruence, or skip reasons in a proof.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In isosceles triangle ABC, AB = AC, angle B = 3x + 5, and angle C = 5x - 19. Find x and justify each step.

Ways to Teach It
Cut a paper triangle, rearrange its three corners into a straight angle, then translate the observation into a formal angle-sum proof.
Write and defend a response to: Why does knowing two angles of a triangle determine the third angle?
Sort cards showing diagrams, claims, and reasons, then race to build valid triangle proofs with a partner.
Use a roof-truss diagram to calculate missing angles or lengths and explain which triangle theorem supports each calculation.
