What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students prove facts about trapezoids using definitions, parallel-line relationships, congruent triangles, and known theorems. They use those results to find missing side lengths, angle measures, diagonals, and midsegments in mathematical and real-world problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write a logical proof using parallel-line angle facts, triangle congruence, or trapezoid theorems. They find missing angles and lengths, explain each step, and apply the same reasoning to a diagram or word problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the parallel bases with the nonparallel legs. They may assume every trapezoid has congruent legs, congruent diagonals, or congruent base angles. Some use measurements from a diagram as proof.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: In isosceles trapezoid ABCD, AB is parallel to CD, AD = BC, AB = 10, and CD = 18. Prove AC = BD, then find the midsegment length.

Ways to Teach It
Students cut and fold paper isosceles trapezoids to compare base angles, diagonals, and the line joining the leg midpoints.
Ask students to explain why congruent diagonals do not prove that every quadrilateral is an isosceles trapezoid.
Run a card sort matching trapezoid diagrams, given facts, valid conclusions, and the theorem that supports each conclusion.
Use a roof truss diagram shaped like a trapezoid, then calculate an unknown support length using the midsegment theorem.
