What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use known side lengths or angle measures to find missing parts of a right triangle. They decide whether a trigonometric ratio or the Pythagorean Theorem fits the given information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students label the sides from a given reference angle and choose sine, cosine, tangent, or the Pythagorean Theorem correctly. They solve for missing measures, include units, and check that answers fit the diagram.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often label opposite and adjacent sides without using the chosen reference angle. They may invert a ratio, use radians instead of degrees, or treat the hypotenuse as a leg. Some try to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find an angle.
How to Assess It
- Give a right triangle with one leg of 9 units and a hypotenuse of 15 units. Ask students to find the missing leg and both acute angles, showing each equation.

Ways to Teach It
Use tape to mark a right triangle on the floor, then have students measure two parts and calculate the remaining sides and angles.
Ask students to explain in writing how changing the reference angle changes the opposite and adjacent sides but not the hypotenuse.
Run a matching game where students pair triangle diagrams with the correct trigonometric equation before solving each one.
Measure a flagpole’s shadow and the sun’s angle of elevation, then calculate the flagpole’s height and compare it with an estimate.
