What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students translate a diagram or context into an equation using sine, cosine, or tangent. They solve for one unknown side or angle and interpret the answer with correct units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct ratio, write an equation, and solve accurately with algebra or an inverse trig function. They include units and check that the result fits the diagram or context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students label opposite and adjacent sides without using the given reference angle. They may use the wrong calculator mode or confuse an inverse trig function with a reciprocal.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 12-foot ladder has its base 5 feet from a wall. Find the angle it makes with the ground, to the nearest degree.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a cardboard right triangle, ruler, and protractor; have them measure two quantities, hide one, and solve for it.
Show sin θ = 7/10 and tan θ = 7/10; ask students to explain what triangle information each equation represents.
Run a card match with triangle diagrams, trig equations, calculator steps, and solutions; teams justify every completed set.
Students measure their distance from a flagpole and an angle of elevation, then calculate the pole’s height, including eye level.
