What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide which side is the hypotenuse and represent the side lengths with an equation. They solve for a missing length and use the result in a mathematical or practical situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label the legs and hypotenuse from a diagram or situation. They write the right equation, solve for the missing length, and interpret the answer with reasonable units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat either leg as the hypotenuse or add side lengths before squaring. They may also forget to take the square root or leave off units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A 13-foot ladder reaches 12 feet up a wall. Find the distance from the wall, and show your equation and units.

Ways to Teach It
Build right triangles with straws, label each side, then use square tiles to compare the areas represented by each squared length.
Show two different solution methods for one missing side and ask students to write which method is correct and why.
Run a card match with triangle diagrams, Pythagorean equations, and missing side lengths, then have pairs check each matched set.
Measure a rectangular tabletop’s length and width, calculate its diagonal, and check the result with a tape measure.
