What Mastery Looks Like: Students choose the correct operation by tracking the currency units in the rate. They calculate accurately, include fees when given, round money correctly, and explain what the result means.
Common Misconceptions: Students often multiply when they should divide, especially when the rate is written in the opposite direction. They may ignore currency units, exchange fees, or rounding to the nearest cent.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: A traveler exchanges $350 at 1 USD = 0.92 EUR after paying a $6 fee. Find the euros received, rounded to the nearest cent.

Lesson moves

Set up a mock exchange booth with currency cards, posted rates, and fees, then have students exchange a fixed travel budget.
Ask students to explain in writing how currency units show whether to multiply or divide by an exchange rate.
Run a conversion relay where teams solve currency cards, check units, and pass only after explaining their operation choice.
