What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students translate a table, equation, or situation into a V-shaped graph. They identify the vertex, axis of symmetry, intercepts, domain, range, and where the function increases or decreases.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student plots the vertex and draws both branches with the correct slopes and direction. They label key features and explain how the equation, table, or context supports the graph.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse the sign of the horizontal shift, placing the vertex at h instead of using x = h correctly. They may draw only one branch, assume every graph opens upward, or confuse domain with range.
How to Assess It
- Give students y = -2|x - 3| + 4. Ask them to graph it and label the vertex, axis of symmetry, intercepts, domain, range, and intervals of increase and decrease.

Ways to Teach It
Fold a coordinate grid along x = 2, then place matching points to build y = |x - 2| + 1.
Compare y = |x| and y = -3|x + 2| + 1, then write how each parameter changes the graph.
Run a card sort matching equations, tables, graphs, vertices, and ranges, then have pairs justify every match.
Graph the greenhouse penalty P = 3|T - 72|, then explain the vertex and what equal penalties mean in context.
