What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a situation into a multiplication, division, addition, or subtraction problem using scientific notation. They calculate, adjust the coefficient and exponent, and report an answer with appropriate units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student identifies the needed operation, calculates accurately, and applies exponent rules correctly. The final answer has a coefficient from 1 up to 10, includes units, and fits the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply or divide the coefficients but handle the powers of ten incorrectly. They may also add exponents when adding numbers, ignore units, or leave an invalid coefficient such as 24 × 10⁵.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: A satellite sends 3.2 × 10⁶ bytes each minute for 4.5 × 10² minutes. Find the total bytes in scientific notation and label the unit.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs quantity cards, such as cell counts and sample sizes, then have students choose an operation and calculate each result.
Ask students to explain why adding 3 × 10⁵ and 4 × 10⁶ requires rewriting one number before combining coefficients.
Run a relay where teams solve scientific notation word problems, check coefficient form, and pass corrected answers to the next student.
Use planet distances and travel speeds to calculate estimated travel times, with answers written in scientific notation and labeled in hours.
