Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.8.AR.4 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.8.AR.4.1
Given a system of two linear equations and a specified set of possible solutions, determine which ordered pairs satisfy the system of linear equations.
- MA.8.AR.4.2
Given a system of two linear equations represented graphically on the same coordinate plane, determine whether there is one solution, no solution or infinitely ...
- MA.8.AR.4.3
Given a mathematical or real-world context, solve systems of two linear equations by graphing.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent two related linear equations with graphs, tables, or algebra. They identify values that make both equations true and interpret where the relationships meet.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find and check an ordered pair that makes both equations true. They recognize one solution, no solution, and infinitely many solutions from equations or graphs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think any point on either line solves the system. They may also confuse no solution with zero, or miss that identical equations have infinitely many solutions.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Solve y = 2x + 1 and y = -x + 7, then explain what the solution means on a graph.”

Ways to Teach It
Graph two equations on transparencies, overlay them, and mark the intersection as the ordered pair that satisfies both equations.
Ask students to write why a point on one line may not solve a system, then compare explanations with a partner.
Play System Match by pairing equation cards with graph cards, solution cards, and cards showing one, none, or infinitely many solutions.
Model two phone plans with equations, find the break-even point, and explain which plan costs less before and after that point.
