What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place positive and negative numbers on a number line and compare their values. They find opposites and use absolute value to describe distance from zero.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly plot, compare, and order positive and negative numbers. They identify opposites and explain absolute value as distance from zero, regardless of direction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think -8 is greater than -3 because 8 is greater than 3. They may write |-5| = -5 or confuse absolute value with changing the sign.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Plot -6, -1, 0, and 4 on a number line, then circle the number with the greatest absolute value and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Make a floor number line with tape, then have students stand on given integers and walk to each number’s opposite.
Ask students to explain why -2 is greater than -7 and why both numbers have positive absolute values.
Play integer war with signed number cards, awarding each round to the greater number or the number with greater absolute value.
Use temperatures and bank balances to compare values, identify opposites, and describe each value’s distance from zero.
