What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine two matching right triangles to form a rectangle and use that model to explain the factor of one-half. They identify a base and perpendicular height, then calculate a triangle’s area.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use two matching right triangles to make a rectangle and explain why one triangle has half its area. They correctly identify a base and its perpendicular height, then calculate the area with labeled square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply base by height without dividing by 2. They may use a slanted side as the height, even when it is not perpendicular to the base. Some think rotating a triangle changes its area.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “A triangle has a base of 9 cm and a perpendicular height of 4 cm. Find its area and explain why you divide by 2.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two congruent paper right triangles, then have them build a rectangle and label its base, height, and area.
Ask students to write: “Why does the triangle area rule include division by 2?” and support their answer with a rectangle sketch.
Play Triangle Area Match using cards with triangle diagrams, dimensions, and area values for students to pair in teams.
Show a triangular garden plan, provide its base and perpendicular height, and have students calculate how many square feet need soil.
