What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students replace a variable with each integer from a given list. They simplify both sides, compare the results, and decide whether each value works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student substitutes positive, negative, and zero values accurately. The student simplifies both sides, makes the correct comparison, and clearly labels each value as true or false.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mishandle negative signs when substituting integers. Some change the inequality symbol or assume every listed value must work. Others check only one side instead of comparing both sides.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: For x in {-3, -1, 0, 2}, list the values that make 2x + 1 < 4 true and show each substitution.

Ways to Teach It
Place integer cards on a true or false mat after students test each value in a displayed equation or inequality.
Ask students to explain why x = -2 makes one inequality true but a similar inequality false.
Play Solution Sort, where teams test integer cards and sort them under matching equations and inequalities.
Give daily temperatures and a freezing rule, then have students test which listed temperatures meet the rule.
