What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the origin and tell which axis runs horizontally and which runs vertically. They read each pair as x first, then y, and place labeled points in the first quadrant.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name the horizontal and vertical axes and mark the origin as (0, 0). They plot and label points accurately, including pairs with a zero coordinate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the x- and y-values or move up before moving right. They may label the origin as (1, 1), confuse the axes, or count grid lines unevenly.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank first-quadrant grid. Ask them to label the origin and axes, then plot and label (2, 5) and (5, 2).

Ways to Teach It
Make a floor grid with masking tape; students stand at coordinates from cards, then place a labeled sticky note at each location.
Display three plotted points and ask, "How does each coordinate tell you where to move from the origin?"
Play Coordinate Bingo: call ordered pairs, students mark matching points on grids, and winners read back coordinates for checking.
Give students a zoo map on a coordinate grid and ask them to name the locations of four exhibits.
