Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.5.GR.4 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.5.GR.4.1
Identify the origin and axes in the coordinate system. Plot and label ordered pairs in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane.
- MA.5.GR.4.2
Represent mathematical and real-world problems by plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane and interpret coordinate values of points in the...

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read and write ordered pairs, moving along the x-axis first and the y-axis second. They use points on a coordinate grid to model locations and solve short problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately plots and names points on a coordinate grid, including grids with different axis scales. Given a short situation, the student uses ordered pairs to show locations and explains what each coordinate means.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse the x- and y-coordinates or move vertically before moving horizontally. They may start counting at 1 instead of 0, ignore the axis scale, or place points between grid lines.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A robot moves 4 units right and 3 units up from the origin. Plot and label its location, then write its ordered pair and explain which coordinate comes first.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a large coordinate grid on the floor, give students ordered-pair cards, and have them stand at each location.
Ask students to explain in writing why (3, 5) and (5, 3) mark different locations.
Play Coordinate Battleship on first-quadrant grids, with partners calling ordered pairs to find hidden points.
Use a map of a school fair, then have students locate booths and write ordered pairs for each one.
