What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plot ordered pairs in all four quadrants and connect points to represent rectangles. They find horizontal and vertical side lengths from the coordinates, then use those lengths to calculate perimeter or area.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately plots ordered pairs in all four quadrants and connects them to form a rectangle. The student uses coordinate differences to find side lengths, then calculates perimeter and area correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the x- and y-coordinates or use the wrong direction for negative values. They may count grid points instead of unit intervals, or confuse perimeter with area.
How to Assess It
- Give students the vertices (-3, 2), (4, 2), (4, -2), and (-3, -2). Ask them to plot the rectangle and find its side lengths, perimeter, and area.

Ways to Teach It
Make a floor coordinate grid with tape, then have students stand at given vertices and determine the rectangle’s side lengths, perimeter, and area.
Ask students to explain why subtracting x-coordinates finds a horizontal side length and subtracting y-coordinates finds a vertical side length.
Play Coordinate Rectangle Challenge, where pairs draw four coordinate cards, plot a valid rectangle, and score its correct perimeter and area.
Give students coordinates for a rectangular park map and ask them to calculate the fencing needed and the ground area covered.
