Florida B.E.S.T. MA.6.GR.1.1

Math6th GradeApply previous understanding of the coordinate plane to solve problems.

The Standard

Extend previous understanding of the coordinate plane to plot rational number ordered pairs in all four quadrants and on both axes. Identify the x- or y-axis as the line of reflection when two ordered pairs have an opposite x- or y-coordinate.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plot ordered pairs with positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals on a coordinate plane. They identify the reflection axis when one coordinate changes to its opposite.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately plot integers, fractions, and decimals in every quadrant and on either axis. They compare two points and correctly identify the x-axis or y-axis as the reflection line.

Common Misconceptions

Students often reverse the x- and y-coordinates or misread negative values. They may also confuse the reflection rules, naming the x-axis when x-values are opposites.

How to Assess It

Give students the points A(-3, 2), B(3, 2), and C(-3, -2). Ask them to plot each point and name the reflection axis for AB and AC.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Make a floor coordinate grid with tape, then have students stand at ordered pairs and move to reflected locations.

  2. Ask students to explain why changing only the sign of x reflects a point across the y-axis.

  3. Play reflection match with cards showing points, reflected points, and axis labels that students must group correctly.

  4. Use a city map grid to plot locations, then place matching landmarks as reflections across a main road represented by an axis.
