What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine tables or ordered pairs to find the rule connecting each input to its output. They use that rule to complete missing values and make predictions.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify a rule that works for every input and output pair. They can use the rule to find missing values and explain how they checked it.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the outputs as a separate sequence instead of connecting each output to its input. They may choose a rule that fits one pair but fails for the other pairs.

How to Assess It

Give the pairs (1, 4), (2, 7), (3, 10), and (5, 16). Ask students to write the rule and find the output for 8.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students number cards and counters to build each input and output pair, then record the rule in a table.

  2. Ask, “How can you prove your rule works for every row in the table?” and have students write a two-sentence explanation.

  3. Play Rule Detective, where partners create input-output tables and earn a point for finding and checking each hidden rule.

  4. Create a table for a bike rental that costs $4 plus $3 per hour, then explain the rule.
