What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students start with each given input and follow the stated operation or sequence of operations. They record each input beside its matching result in an organized table.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly calculate an output for every input and place each value in the proper column. They can explain how one row follows the given rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may switch the input and output columns. They may apply the rule only once, instead of starting with each new input. Multi-step rules can cause skipped operations or incorrect order.
How to Assess It
- Give inputs 2, 5, and 8 with the rule “multiply by 3, then subtract 1.” Ask students to complete and label a two-column table.

Ways to Teach It
Give students number cards and counters, then have them model each input, apply the rule, and record the matching output.
Ask students to explain in writing how they found the output for input 7 using the rule “double, then add 4.”
Play Rule Relay, where teams draw input cards, calculate outputs, and add correct input-output pairs to a shared table.
Use a taxi fare rule with a starting fee and per-mile charge, then table the total cost for several trip lengths.
