What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students extend number sequences by applying an operation rule to each term. They identify missing terms, describe the rule, and decide whether a number fits the pattern.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can extend a sequence accurately and state the operation used between terms. The student can fill in missing terms and check whether a given number belongs in the pattern.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply the rule to the starting number each time instead of to the previous term. They often confuse adding 4 with multiplying by 4 or assume every pattern increases.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Complete 3, 9, 15, __, __. State the rule, then explain whether 30 belongs in the pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Build cube towers with heights 3, 6, 9, and 12, then add two more towers and label the rule.
Ask students to explain how they know the next two terms in 2, 6, 10, 14.
Play Rule Detective: one partner writes five terms, and the other names the rule and adds two terms.
Create a savings table starting with $5 and adding $3 weekly, then find the balance after eight weeks.
