What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine a number sequence and determine how each term changes. They name the rule, use it to find missing terms, and recognize repeated multiplication.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student states the rule using clear language, such as “multiply by 3 each time.” The student completes missing terms and checks the rule across the full pattern.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse multiplying by a number with adding that number. They may check only one step or assume every pattern has a constant difference.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Complete 5, 15, 45, __, __. Write the rule and explain how you know it works.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs counters to build groups of 2, 4, 8, and 16, then label how each group changes.
Ask students to compare 3, 6, 12, 24 and explain why “add 3” does not describe the full pattern.
Play Rule Detective with sequence cards, and have teams name the rule before adding the next two terms.
Compare totals in 1, 2, 4, and 8 equal snack bags, then describe the doubling pattern in the number of snacks.
