What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students look for repeated features, regular changes, and relationships among quantities. They use those observations to make predictions, simplify work, and connect different representations of the same idea.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can identify what repeats, what changes, and how quantities are related. They use that information to predict another case, choose an efficient method, and explain connections among models, tables, graphs, or equations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may continue a sequence from its last step without checking earlier steps. They may focus on colors or positions instead of the mathematical relationship. They also may state a rule that works for one case but not all cases.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Display three stages of a growing tile figure. Ask students to draw stage 4 and explain which feature supports their prediction.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build two growing figures with tiles, record each stage, and mark the part that repeats and the part that changes.

  2. Ask, “What stays the same, what changes, and how does that help you predict the next case?”

  3. Play Pattern Detective by showing number lists, diagrams, or equations and awarding points for rules that fit every example.

  4. Use a weekly calendar, store receipt, or seating chart to find repeated quantities and explain a shortcut for calculating a total.
