What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use known unit relationships to rename a measurement in another unit from the same system. They choose multiplication or division based on whether the new unit is smaller or larger.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students convert accurately in either direction across length, weight or mass, capacity, and time. They can show that 4 feet equals 48 inches and explain why the smaller unit gives a larger count.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often multiply when converting to a larger unit and divide when converting to a smaller unit. They may assume every relationship is based on 10, treating feet, time, and liquid units like metric units. They also confuse ounces with fluid ounces.
How to Assess It
- Use a four-part exit ticket: convert 5 yards to feet, 3 kilograms to grams, 2 gallons to quarts, and 4 minutes to seconds. Ask students to check one answer with an inverse operation.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students measure ribbon in inches and feet, pour water into cups and pints, and weigh objects in grams.
Have students explain why changing feet to inches uses multiplication while changing inches to feet uses division, then defend the rule with an example.
Give pairs matching cards with equivalent measurements, such as 3 feet and 36 inches, and award points for correct matches and explanations.
Use a party plan with 2 gallons of juice and a 120-minute schedule, then calculate cup servings and total hours.
