What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use known angle measures and angle relationships to find a missing whole-number measure. They represent the situation with an equation containing a letter or symbol for the unknown.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the total angle and the known parts. They write an equation such as 37 + x = 90, solve it, and check that the measures combine correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use side length instead of angle measure. They may add when they should subtract, or treat adjacent angles as equal. Some forget that right, straight, and full angles measure 90°, 180°, and 360°.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Two adjacent angles form a right angle. One measures 37°. Write an equation and find the missing angle.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange paper angle wedges inside a right-angle template, label one measure, then write and solve an equation for the missing measure.
Discuss this prompt: A door opens 110°, then closes 35°. What angle remains, and which equation represents the change?
Match cards showing angle diagrams, equations, and missing measures, then explain each match to a partner.
Use a clock face to find missing angles when known sections combine to make 90°, 180°, or 360°.
