What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare each opening with a quarter turn, half turn, and full turn. They name the angle type, including the larger turn beyond a straight angle.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can look at or draw an angle and name its type regardless of its position. The student explains the choice using quarter turns, half turns, or degree ranges.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may judge angle size by ray length or orientation. They often call every wide angle obtuse, including straight and reflex angles. Some see a straight angle as a line with no angle.
How to Assess It
- Give students five unlabeled angle sketches, one of each type. Ask them to label each and justify each choice by comparing it with 90°, 180°, or 360°.

Ways to Teach It
Join two craft sticks with a brass fastener, position five angle types, and mark each chosen turn with a yarn arc.
Students respond to the prompt, “How can the same two rays show an obtuse angle and a reflex angle?”
Play an angle sort relay with sketch cards, placing each under acute, right, obtuse, straight, or reflex and defending disputed choices.
Use clock hands to model times, then name both the smaller and larger angles formed at each time.
