What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use endpoints and arrowheads to tell how a straight figure continues. They draw and label examples, then find parallel, perpendicular, and other crossing pairs within flat shapes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student uses endpoints and arrowheads to distinguish each type of figure. The student finds line relationships in shapes and explains that a square corner shows perpendicular lines.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any straight mark a line, even when it has endpoints. They may think perpendicular lines must be vertical and horizontal, or that parallel lines must be the same length.
How to Assess It
- Give students an exit ticket with a rectangle and one diagonal. Ask them to label one segment, one parallel pair, one perpendicular pair, and one intersecting pair.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs dot stickers, yarn, and arrow cards to build and label points, segments, rays, lines, and line pairs.
Display three line pairs and ask, “Which pair is parallel, perpendicular, or only intersecting, and what evidence proves your choice?”
Play Line Match by having students pair diagram cards with word cards, then explain each match to a partner.
Examine a classroom floor plan and mark parallel walls, perpendicular corners, intersecting paths, segments, rays, and points.
