Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.3.GR.1 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.3.GR.1.1
Describe and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, intersecting lines, perpendicular lines and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
- MA.3.GR.1.2
Identify and draw quadrilaterals based on their defining attributes. Quadrilaterals include parallelograms, rhombi, rectangles, squares and trapezoids.
- MA.3.GR.1.3
Draw line(s) of symmetry in a two-dimensional figure and identify line-symmetric two-dimensional figures.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines, including lines shown in different positions. They sort and name quadrilaterals by side lengths, parallel sides, and right angles.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly names parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines in any orientation. The student classifies quadrilaterals using side lengths, parallel sides, and right angles, and explains each choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any crossing lines perpendicular, even when they do not form right angles. They may think a turned shape changes its name or that a square cannot also be a rectangle and rhombus.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides and four right angles. Name every group it belongs to and mark one pair of perpendicular sides.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs geoboards and rubber bands to build quadrilaterals, then label parallel sides, equal sides, and right angles.
Ask, “How are a square and rectangle alike and different?” Have students support each claim with a visible property.
Play a card sort using quadrilateral pictures and property cards, requiring students to place shapes in every matching group.
Take a classroom photo hunt for quadrilaterals and line pairs in windows, tiles, desks, signs, and shelves.
