What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students review comments from teachers, classmates, or editing tools and decide which suggestions will help. They revise wording, organization, and connections between ideas so the writing is clear and flows logically.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort useful feedback from suggestions that do not fit their purpose. Their revisions make ideas easier to follow through clearer wording, logical order, strong transitions, and consistent focus.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may accept every suggestion without deciding whether it improves meaning. They may also treat revision as proofreading, changing spelling and punctuation while ignoring unclear ideas, weak transitions, or poor organization.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short, unclear paragraph with three feedback comments. Ask them to choose two useful comments, revise the paragraph, and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It
Print a paragraph, cut it into sentence strips, and have pairs reorder it, add transitions, and explain why the new order works.
Give two comments on a draft and ask students to write which one would improve clarity most and why.
Play Revision Relay, where teams rotate through drafts and make one labeled improvement to wording, order, transitions, or focus.
Have students revise a confusing school announcement after classmates identify missing details, awkward wording, and places where ideas do not connect.
