What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan before drafting, then reread their work with a clear purpose. They use useful feedback from peers and adults to improve ideas, order, transitions, and wording. They also correct errors that distract readers.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why each major revision makes the writing easier to follow. The final draft has a clear focus, logical connections, and fewer errors than the earlier draft.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revision as correcting spelling and punctuation only. They may accept every suggestion without judging it, or ignore feedback that does not provide replacement words. Some add transitions without fixing weak links between ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a draft paragraph with this peer comment: “I cannot see how the second example supports your claim.” Ask them to revise it and label changes for clarity, cohesion, and correctness.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence strips from a disorganized paragraph, then have them reorder, connect, and edit the sentences into a clear paragraph.

  2. Partners exchange introductions, write one specific suggestion for clarity, then explain which feedback they used or rejected and why.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams improve one paragraph by rotating through focus, organization, transitions, word choice, and editing stations.

  4. Have students revise a confusing school announcement so families can quickly understand the event, date, location, and required action.
