What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan a piece, draft it, and improve its ideas, structure, and wording. They edit errors and use specific feedback from peers and adults to guide useful changes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use a plan to organize a focused draft. They strengthen ideas, order, details, and word choice during revision, then correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. They can explain which feedback they used and why.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think revision means fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may accept every suggestion without judging it, or reject feedback without considering it. Peer comments may be vague, such as “make it better,” instead of naming a problem and possible fix.

How to Assess It

Give students a short draft and one peer comment. Ask them to make one revision and one edit, label each change, and explain how the feedback helped.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a printed draft into paragraph strips, rearrange them for clearer flow, and add one transition between sections.

  2. Discuss this prompt: Which feedback would improve the draft most, and what exact change would you make?

  3. Play Feedback Sort by placing comment cards under revise, edit, use, or do not use, then defend each choice.

  4. Compare drafting a school announcement with how editors revise news articles before publication, including feedback, fact checks, and final proofreading.
