What Students Need to Do
- Students make a plan, write a draft, and improve the ideas and organization. They correct errors and decide how to use comments from classmates and adults.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can use a plan to create a focused draft, then improve its ideas, order, and clarity. They correct language errors and explain which feedback they used or rejected.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation rather than improving ideas and organization. They may accept every suggestion without judging it, or ignore feedback that is unclear. Some skip planning and expect the first draft to work.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short draft and one peer comment. Ask them to make one meaningful revision, correct two editing errors, and label each change.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a cut-up draft; students arrange paragraphs, add missing details on sticky notes, then explain their choices.
Ask students to compare two revisions and write which change improves clarity most, using evidence from both versions.
Run a revision relay with stations for focus, organization, evidence, sentence clarity, spelling, and punctuation.
Have students revise a school announcement after classmates test whether the date, place, purpose, and directions are clear.
