What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan a piece, write a draft, and improve it through revision and editing. They use adult guidance and peer comments to clarify ideas, add details, organize information, and correct errors.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses a plan to draft focused writing. They make meaningful changes after feedback, then correct errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think revision means correcting spelling and punctuation only. They may accept every peer suggestion without deciding whether it improves meaning, organization, or detail.

How to Assess It

Give students a short draft with one unclear idea and three convention errors. Ask them to revise the idea, edit the errors, and label each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students cut apart a printed paragraph, rearrange the sentences, add one detail, and explain how the changes improve the writing.

  2. Ask partners to read drafts and respond to two prompts: What is clear, and where do you want more information?

  3. Play Revision Relay, where teams improve a draft by adding details, replacing vague words, fixing order, and correcting conventions.

  4. Use a sample restaurant review, then have students plan, draft, revise, and edit a review of a familiar school lunch.
