What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan a piece, write a draft, and improve its ideas, details, and order. They use adult and peer comments to choose revisions, then edit for writing rules.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student uses a simple organizer to prepare a draft. The student adds, removes, replaces, or moves ideas after feedback, then corrects spelling, capitals, punctuation, and grammar.

Common Misconceptions

Students often think revising means correcting spelling and punctuation. They may accept every peer suggestion without deciding whether it improves the writing, or make changes without checking their original plan.

How to Assess It

Give students their own paragraph and one partner comment. Ask them to submit the original, mark one revision and one edit, then explain why the revision helps the reader.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a paragraph with color-coded sentence strips, then move, replace, or add strips before correcting capitals and punctuation.

  2. Partners read drafts aloud and answer, “What is clear, and where do you need one more detail?” before writers choose a change.

  3. Play Revision or Editing: teams sort change cards, such as adding a detail or fixing a comma, and explain each choice.

  4. Write a school lunch suggestion for the principal, use a checklist, and revise it after a classmate responds as the audience.
