What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan their ideas, write a draft, and make changes that improve meaning and organization. They use adult and peer feedback, then edit for writing errors.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students organize ideas before drafting. They use specific feedback to improve ideas, order, details, and wording. They also correct grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Common Misconceptions

Students often think revising means fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may accept every peer suggestion without deciding whether it improves the draft. Some plan after writing instead of before.

How to Assess It

Give students a short draft and one peer comment. Ask them to plan one addition, revise one sentence, and correct three marked errors.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students a cut-up paragraph to reorder, then have them add a missing detail and correct punctuation with colored pencils.

  2. Ask students to write which peer suggestion would most improve their draft and explain why before making the change.

  3. Run a revision relay where pairs earn points for finding vague words, missing details, sentence errors, and punctuation mistakes in sample drafts.

  4. Have students revise a school announcement after classmates test whether the message is clear, complete, and free of errors.
