What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students review comments from teachers, classmates, or editing tools and decide which suggestions will improve a draft. They revise ideas, organization, and language, not just surface errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select useful comments, make meaningful changes, and explain their choices. Their revised draft has clearer ideas, stronger organization, and language that fits the purpose and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat revision as fixing only spelling and punctuation. They may accept every suggestion without judging it, or reject feedback because it changes their original draft.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph and three feedback comments. Ask them to revise the paragraph using two comments, then explain why they rejected or used each one.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed draft, colored pens, and feedback cards, then have them revise for clarity, organization, and style.
Ask students to write which feedback comment would most improve a sample draft and defend their choice with evidence.
Run a revision relay where teams improve one sentence at stations labeled clarity, structure, word choice, and sentence flow.
Have students compare automated suggestions on a college essay or workplace email, accepting only changes that improve meaning and tone.
