What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students judge comments from teachers, classmates, and editing tools instead of accepting every suggestion. They revise ideas, organization, wording, and tone to help a named audience understand the message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can select useful comments, reject poor advice, and explain their choices. Their revisions make the message, evidence, organization, and tone clearer for the intended readers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may accept every suggestion without judging whether it fits their purpose or audience. They may treat grammar-checker advice as always correct. Some only fix spelling and punctuation instead of changing ideas, details, organization, or tone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students a short draft for parents and three feedback comments. They choose one comment, revise two sentences, and explain how the change helps parents.

Ways to Teach It
Give students printed drafts and sticky-note feedback; they sort comments by audience need, then revise one paragraph using two useful notes.
Ask, “Which comment would most help a ninth-grade reader, and what exact change would you make because of it?”
Run Feedback Triage: teams label comment cards “use,” “adapt,” or “reject,” then defend each choice with the intended audience in mind.
Have students revise a school event announcement twice, once for students and once for families, using partner and grammar-checker feedback.
