What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-level nonfiction and identify its central idea, key details, and purpose. They cite evidence, explain how ideas develop, and write an objective summary.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state the central idea in their own words and select the strongest supporting evidence. They summarize without adding opinions and explain how the author organizes ideas.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name the broad topic instead of stating the central idea. They may choose an interesting detail as evidence or include opinions in an objective summary.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article about later school start times. Ask them to state the central idea, cite two supporting details, and write a two-sentence objective summary.

Ways to Teach It
Use scissors to sort a cut-up article into claim, evidence, counterclaim, and conclusion, then rebuild its logical order.
After reading an article, write: What is the central idea, and which two details most clearly develop it?
Play Evidence Match: teams pair central idea cards with supporting sentences and reject details that are related but weak.
Compare a school announcement with a local news report on the same event, noting purpose, audience, facts, and omitted details.
