What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out unfamiliar and multiple-meaning words using context, word parts, background knowledge, and reference tools. They explain their reasoning and use new vocabulary accurately.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer a word's meaning and point to context, roots, affixes, or reference sources as evidence. They use the word correctly in a new sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary meaning they know, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may also treat prefixes and roots as complete definitions instead of clues.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with one bold unfamiliar word. Ask them to define it and underline two clues that support their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards, prefix cards, and root cards to build words, predict meanings, and check them in a dictionary.

  2. Ask students to explain which clues reveal the meaning of an unfamiliar word in a short paragraph.

  3. Play Context Clue Match by pairing unknown-word sentences with meaning cards, then requiring players to name the clue used.

  4. Examine a restaurant menu or store advertisement and use context and word parts to explain unfamiliar terms.
