What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students determine the precise meanings of unfamiliar and multiple-meaning words in complex texts. They use context, roots, affixes, word relationships, and reference tools to justify their choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select the meaning that fits the passage and support it with specific context clues or word parts. They verify uncertain meanings with a reliable reference and explain effects on tone.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking how the word functions in the passage. They may also treat a familiar root as proof of meaning or ignore connotation and tone.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one unfamiliar word underlined. Ask them to define it, cite two clues, and explain why another possible meaning does not fit.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs context cards, root cards, and affix cards, then have them assemble and justify likely meanings for five unfamiliar words.
Ask students to explain how replacing one charged word in an editorial changes its tone and message.
Play a context clue challenge where teams choose among three definitions and earn points only when their cited evidence supports the choice.
Compare specialized words from a job posting and a news article, then rewrite each word for a general audience.
