What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use a focused question to guide their research. They find relevant facts in more than one trustworthy source, organize notes by subtopic, and use the information to answer the question.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student gathers relevant facts from at least two trustworthy sources and sorts them under clear headings. The student uses those notes to answer the research question accurately in their own words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy whole sentences instead of taking notes in their own words. They may use the first source they find, include unrelated facts, or assume every website is reliable.

How to Assess It

Give students a question and three short source cards, including one unreliable source. Ask them to choose two valid sources, record one relevant fact from each, and write a two-sentence answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed source cards and sticky notes to collect facts, label each source, and sort notes under two or three headings.

  2. Ask students to write which source they trust most and explain their choice using the author, date, evidence, or publisher.

  3. Play Source Detective by having teams score sample sources for author, date, evidence, and connection to the research question.

  4. Have students research which native plant would work best in the school garden, then recommend one using facts from two local sources.
