What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a clear question to guide their research. They gather relevant information from more than one source, sort their notes by idea, and use them to answer the question.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gathers relevant facts from at least two sources and sorts them under clear headings. The student uses those notes to write a focused answer in their own words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy whole sentences instead of taking brief notes in their own words. They may rely on one source, collect unrelated facts, or organize notes by source rather than by idea.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short source cards about honeybees and ask, “How do honeybees help plants?” Have them write an answer and label one supporting fact from each source.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a book, article, and diagram about frogs, then have students sort sticky-note facts under shared headings.
Ask students to write which source best answers, “How do frogs survive winter?” and explain why using one detail.
Play Fact Sort Relay, with teams placing fact cards under headings and removing details that do not answer the research question.
Research ways the school could reduce lunch waste, using a cafeteria interview, a waste chart, and a short recycling article.
